DIRECTIONS

CDD EPIIC

We are going beyond what students learn and focusing on how they are learning.

At DIRECTIONS, we believe in pushing the boundaries of education. We go beyond traditional methods to foster active engagement and prepare students for the challenges of the future. Today, CCD is developing creative spaces and environments to provide a curriculum that helps prepare students for college and helps develop the complex, collaborative, and creative skills needed for future careers. That curriculum takes an EPIIC approach—learning that is Experiential, Participatory, Image-Rich, Interdisciplinary, and Connected. Through this innovative curriculum, students become active participants in their education, connecting knowledge to real-world contexts and developing the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. This unique approach immerses students in what they know instead of being passive recipients of learning. It is a model used throughout the learning system to develop students into creative problem solvers.

Students learn through activities and project-based learning. Teachers act as project facilitators who seek to assist students in finding solutions by fearlessly experiencing failures and successes for their sought-after solutions. Specific experiences built into each grade level give students a comprehensive understanding of designing, prototyping, evaluating, and modifying based on their knowledge of analysis and results. Whether during a preschool coding exercise in a Makerspace or working through a complicated theoretical math problem in a Number Theory course in Upper School, students learn to be resilient problem solvers.

Experiencing and participating are often mistaken for the same thing, but participation means that students have an active role in determining the direction of their learning.

In the CCD STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) program, students may choose the direction of a specific lesson based on the problems they wish to solve and how they want to solve them.

Young people live in a visual world today, and classroom instruction must include dynamic and meaningful imagery. Today’s Students must learn to communicate and tell stories through images to develop skills that will help them succeed in their professional lives. Our classrooms possess the technology to help students absorb, display, and create pictures critical to their lessons.

Our faculty understands that the world beyond the classroom is not divided into definite academic areas; classroom lessons connect diverse and challenging content areas. The middle and upper grades coursework blends various topics, such as math, history, art, and technology, into single projects. For example, an AP art teacher may collaborate with an American Literature teacher to present an engaging and immersive lesson about the Harlem Renaissance. With interdisciplinary instruction, students understand that disciplines overlap in the real world, and problems often require a multifaceted approach.

Applying lessons in the classroom to a real-world context assures the students receive a connected education. Our students forge unique connections with inspiring people, places, and ideas through partnerships with area businesses, community organizations, sister schools in other countries, and alumni leaders in their professions.

We are dedicated to nurturing a supportive environment that empowers our members to explore and develop their unique intellectual, creative, and physical abilities. Our mission is to cultivate independent, resilient learners who embrace failure and success as valuable learning experiences. We foster a strong sense of community where the member-coach-teacher relationship is highly valued and celebrated. Join us on this exciting journey of exploration and active learning!
